Atlanta Junior League’s Tour of Kitchens
(.pdf version)
These homeowners with three children
spend most of their time in the kitchen
and keeping room area, so it was important
to them to have those areas together and
open. They also enjoy cooking,
entertaining, and gardening, so all of
these factors were considered in designing
their kitchen. With 12' ceilings, the
cabinets were taken up to 10' height, the
unique hood wall was made to showcase the
owners’ collection of antique china while
also providing more cabinet storage for
spices and bake items. Light floods the
kitchen from a huge elliptical mahogany
casement window above the double bowl
apron front sink. The window opens to the
owners’ English herb garden and water
feature. There are two large islands, one
works as a prep island and the other as a
homework/serving island—with its two
warming drawers and bar seats. There is a
large commercial range on one side of the
kitchen with a pot filler and a single
convection oven and microwave on the other
side of the kitchen. This arrangement
provides for plenty of working space and
tasks to be accomplished at one time. The
Sub-Zero refrigerator and separate freezer
are centered in the kitchen and anchor the
wall between the Butler’s pantry and the
food pantry with its large elliptical
radius seedy glass doors above. There is
an antique ox yoke chandelier in the
center of the kitchen providing interest
and further expressing the owners’ love of
antiques and a hutch in the food pantry
where the cherry top enhances the
Lancaster green base and wall cabinet.
The faux finish on the walls and Lancaster
green with antique glazing on the trim
warmly tie the rich cherry cabinets
together with the Lancaster green island
and granite tops in the keeping and
breakfast rooms. Reclaimed antique beams
and pillars from a North Carolina barn add
warmth and charm.
